HURRICANES HARVEY & IRMA RESPONSEWhile keeping our brothers and sisters in prayer, if you would like to make a donation to help, we are responding with Lutheran Disaster Response.  You can write checks to SSM and designate “Hurricane Response” on the memo line, or go to elca.org/disaster to donate.

H.E.L.P. (Houston ELder Project) HOUSTON...HELP Houston is a drive to obtain new items for the elderly people who were swamped by the horrendous rains from Hurricane Harvey.  Everyone saw the nursing home picture with residents walking and sitting in knee deep water.  This prompted the drive.  Here are some of the items needed: toiletries (toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap, disposable razors) new adult underwear and disposable underwear, hand sanitizer, nutrition drinks, bottled water, cotton socks, and wash cloths.  Cash or gift cards are also welcome. This effort is being supported by Thrivent.

MOVIE “MILWAUKEE 53206” MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, AT ASCENSIONThis is a powerful documentary, telling the story of those affected by mass incarceration in America’s most incarcerated ZIP code, 53206.  Doors will open at 6:00 pm. Please RSVP to the church office, 414-421-3543, if you plan to attend.  It is not too late!

WELCA “THANKOFFERING” WEEKEND, SEPTEMBER 30 – OCTOBER 1“Thankofferings” are given as an expression of the many blessings we have been given:  our home, our family and friends, our clothing, our church, our nation, our health or our ability to cope with health challenges…Please help support the Women of the ELCA and their work with your contribution.  Use the special giving envelope enclosed for your “Thankoffering”.

32nd ANNUAL CROP WALK, OCTOBER 8, 2017 @ 1:30 P.M.Join walkers from SSM for the 32nd annual Greater Milwaukee CROP Hunger Walk.  People of all faiths come together and walk to raise funds and increase awareness of hunger in Milwaukee and throughout the world. You can also bring non-perishable food items for the Hunger Task Force to the start of the walk at McKinley Marina.   For more information, contact Kelly Sachse at (ksachse15@gmail.com or (414) 453-6597) or stop by the CROP Walk table.

“CHURCHES CARING TOGETHER”, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14We will be participating in many service projects in the community.  One project will be putting together 250 care packages for deployed military personnel.  For the care packages, SSM will be collecting 250 drink mix packages (Gatorade, lemonade, iced tea and Crystal Light packets) and 250 Easy Mac packages.

BOOK DISCUSSION, OCTOBER 14, 4:00 P.M.Our next reading will be Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson.  In this book, the young Alabama lawyer provides a window into the lives and cases of some of the people he has defended.  We think this will provide a compelling backdrop to the movie Milwaukee 53206 that we will watch at Ascension on September 25th.

Daily Bible Verse

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
